Wharf St. Roundabout

Bellingham, WA

This project transforms a five way intersection consisting of State, Forest, Boulevard, and Wharf Streets, into a new roundabout. The layout incorporates the regional South Bay trail to the north and improves pedestrian access and bicycle safety by incorporating the City’s wayfinding sign system that is currently in the Downtown and the Waterfront Districts. The location of the roundabout facilitates traffic between Downtown, the University, Waterfront, and Fairhaven neighborhoods. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the convergence of these neighborhoods with a large rock Cairn in the center island. The rock is a locally sourced Olivine mineral rock near Mount Baker. Based on the concept of an “Urban Filter,” the design showcases sustainability by integrating rain gardens and drought tolerant plant material.
