Central Washington University: Samuelson Communications & Technology Center
Central Washington University
The Samuelson Building renovation and expansion project restored and expanded an existing integrated computer science and technology center. Working with the design team, HBB integrated the building’s entrance plazas with the indoor learning labs and break-out spaces. The geometric shape of the outdoor spaces compliments the strong linear geometries of the building façade with alternating long and short rows of shrubs in contrasting color and texture. The planting design maximizes light exposure into the building during the winter and provides shade in the summer. The entrance plaza designs integrate space for snow removal equipment to keep entrances clear during the winter and include “melt areas” where snow can be piled. The existing allée of deteriorating Chestnut trees along East 9th Avenue were refreshed with more hardy Silver Linden trees. Benches placed between the Linden trees offer numerous shaded places to sit during the warmer months of the year. HBB’s services included developing construction documents with planting and irrigation design, specifications and cost estimate.
