East Howe Steps Plaza
Seattle Department of Transportation / Friends of East Howe Steps Steering Committee
HBB worked with the local community, key stakeholders and adjacent property and business owners to develop a vision, translate that vision into a master plan, and develop final construction documents for the East Howe Steps Plaza. The plaza transforms an existing parking lot into a new gateway at the base of the East Howe hill climb, completing an important pedestrian connection through the Eastlake neighborhood in Seattle. Final construction documents are being completed through a partnership between the community’s steering committee, the City of Seattle, and the adjacent private development. Throughout the process, design alternatives were tailored to respond to community interests, safety/security (CPTED), adjacent development, accessibility, and the infrastructure needed to create a plaza space that can support a wide variety of active and passive activities, including community events. Design features include a flexible plaza space, sensory garden planting, seating areas, view overlook, and opportunities for future public art. HBB also assisted the steering committee with multiple grant applications to fund the final design and development of construction documents.
