City of Bellingham
Located in the Fountain District of Bellingham, Fountain Plaza is a small pocket park with a long history in the community as being a stopping point for access to fresh water. The plaza is the primary gateway into the district and includes a fountain, seating, open plaza, lawn, trees, an artist’s mural on an adjacent power pole, and pedestrian scale lighting. HBB lead a public process with multiple open houses, online surveys, to narrow down three different alternatives to select a preferred conceptual design. The multidisciplinary team of engineers, fountain designer, and public artist was led by HBB to prepare construction documents for the project. The new fountain is a custom basketweave pattern that celebrates the history of the site and the neighborhood. Improvements were also coordinated with an existing festival street and artists mural to the north of the project site. Collectively, these improvements provide an iconic gateway to the neighborhood.
