Port Angeles Waterfront Transportation Improvement Plan
Port Angeles, WA
HBB was part of a multidisciplinary team working on the Downtown Waterfront component of this project which focused on developing a Master Plan for design of the waterfront, including Railroad Avenue, Oak Street, Lincoln Street, Hollywood Beach Park, City Pier, and West End Park. A series of in-depth workshops and interviews with stakeholders, artists and the community identified an extensive list of goals, objectives, and program elements. These include integrating public access and views to the harbor, connecting the waterfront to the downtown core, welcoming visitors arriving on the ferries, providing venues for seasonal activities, encouraging economic development, and incorporating sustainable and natural systems. The “Points of Light” concept emphasizes lighting as the main component; lighting as focal points, lighting fixtures as accents, and lighting as artistic design elements. The design also incorporates a multilevel esplanade along Railroad Avenue and the shoreline. Hollywood Beach Park and the West End Park near Valley Creek Estuary are redefined by providing large natural beach areas and large flexible event and performance spaces for seasonal activities, including the farmers market. HBB took an active role in the public process and provided landscape design and cost estimates for funding and phased development, in addition to construction documents for several phases of the on-going project.
